HXC works with BBC Micro :-)

Post by error »

(Credit for a lot of the below info goes to stardot.org.uk forums)

I'm using a BBC Master 128 with 1770 Disk controller. I'd be interested to hear how other BBC users with different machines are able to use these same settings successfully like I have.

For ease, I simply converted everything to 80 track regardless of original format. This results in larger files, but means you won't accidentally export an 80 track as 40 track and potentially lose data.

Anyway, these settings work for me :

Use a normal -non twisted- PC Floppy cable in the BBC disk port
Depending on file format, make sure you are in either DFS (Ctrl + D + Break), or for ADFS files (Ctrl + A + Break)
Jumper set to bottom right (same as Amiga / ST / Shugart)

Loading floppy images into HXC software

SSD / IMG FILES : DFS File Format I have tested numerous IMG and SSD files, all have loaded perfectly. I can read, format, write.

Load RAW image / Load RAW file. Use floppy config file I've uploaded here - http://www.mediafire.com/?oen68iiql39v6bn or enter the below settings :

Track type : FM
Two sides floppy (No)
Reverse side (No)
Tracks of a side grouped in the file (No)
Number of track : 80
Sector ID Start : 0
Sectors Size : 256
Sectors per track : 10
RPM : 300
Bitrate : 250000
GAP3 Length : 16
Interleave : 0
Skew : 0
Total Sector : 800
Total Size : 204800

ADL FILES :ADFS 'L' format Jumper settings the same, use the following RAW settings :

Download from here http://www.mediafire.com/?0b02b4ivxv96dil or use these settings :

Track type : MFM
Two sides floppy (Yes)
Reverse side (No)
Tracks of a side grouped in the file (No)
Number of track : 80
Sector ID Start : 0
Sectors Size : 256
Sectors per track : 16
RPM : 300
Bitrate : 250000
GAP3 Length : 44
Interleave : 0
Skew : 0
Total Sector : 2560
Total Size : 65536

And that's pretty much it. I hope it works for others, please do post your results here :-)

There may be workarounds, optimizations, etc - I'm not a tech guy. But I hope this will help people as it's working great for me.

Now all the BBC needs is a front end program like the Amiga/Atari/CPC... I can dream ;-)

Did you manage to successfully convert any actual .ADL disk images?

I've tried a few including the Master Welcome Disk but my Master just hangs when I try to boot or select the converted ADFS disk and then shows a disk error 50. DFS/.SSD disk image files aren't a problem and they all work fine for me.

Don't know if I'm missing a setting/configuration option or what :? I tried creating a blank ADFS floppy disk image using the settings shown but when I try to select or catalogue it the Master starts talking about 'compaction'.

Very puzzled as to what to try.

ADL should be supported directly. Just drag & drop it directly on the main window.
