Intellivision Composite Mod (continued)

I wrote a small article on how to connect this modification on a SECAM Intv.

You can see it here : Intv'ouest

It is written in French language, but it features many pictures on how to install the mod, so is still easily understandable for anyone who doesn't know French.

Intellivison Composite Mod

IntvCmod2

I made a mistake on my previous board, so I built another one tonight, and figured out how to connect it to my Intellivision, despite the SECAM adaptater board on this model (added to Intv consoles for French market, of course).

I didn't connect the audio input, as I wanted to be sure whether I could make it up with video first. I will add the audio connection tomorrow, it should be no big deal.
The image quality is well... average :) but it looks far much better than using the UHF interface.

New projects to come...

I'm often on the net chatting with people fond of old computers and consoles. I talked with two of them that got me interested in two projects :

  • Design and build an Intellivision cartridge, that would either interface to a computer or use storage like CF, MMC, SD cards : something along the lines of the Intellicart.
  • Make a Atari ST implementation in a FPGA, something looking much like the Minimig project.

About the Atari ST project, this is something quite ambitious, so let's consider it as a long-term project, as I think I lack some skills to do it properly at the moment, but it doesn't mean that I should not give it a try :) I contacted Minimig's author some time ago and he has been kind to answer to some of my questions, it will be helpful once I decide to get into it.

I will focus on the Intellivision project, that can be seen as two main objectives to achieve :

  • Design the extra logic that it requires (the CPU uses a 16-bit multiplexed address and data bus, with extra signals to control the cartridge).
  • Design what's needed to read data from a memory card and/or a computer. There are many possibilities, but I think I will go with CompactFlash first.

The latter objective is quite interesting, as it is something I've been lacking in many of my previous projects, so having this done could be very useful for many other projects of that kind (especially the Atari ST related one).

These projects will be descibed in the "Oldies" section as they are related to old computers, and to counterbalance the monopoly in updates of the "FPGA" section :)

Yesterday, I built the Intellivision Composite Video Modification, here is a picture of it. Pretty isn't it ? :)
